‘Never Was a Game More Beautiful’

Football remains a black sport in South Africa…but for 90 minutes in 1976, it looked as if it might be different. After only 3 hours training, South Africa’s first sporting team with a multiracial side thrashed an Argentine all-star squad, prompting raucous celebrating by both blacks and whites. “At the Rand Stadium on that March night we glimpsed what took the best part of two more decades to come to pass. Never was a game more beautiful: it still chokes me up to think of it.” (Raymond Whitaker/Intelligent Life.com; HT Andrew Guest/Pitch Invasion)
